a Carol for a Father

Thinking about my Dad this Christmas…  This is a song I wrote about eight years ago, reflecting on the role of Joseph in Jesus’ life.  And the role of my dad in mine.  And the responsibility I have to be a steward of God’s love to my children…

Merry Christmas and a blessed new year…

Carol for a Father

“Away in a manger, no crib for his bed

The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head.

The stars in the sky looking down where he lay.

The little Lord Jesus asleep in the hay.”

Away in a manger in a Middle East town

A young teenage woman gave birth to a son

The father adopted the child on faith

For the angel had told him that this was the One

Isaiah foretold and the prophets of old said that

He would bring hope to a world filled with sin

Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace

He would bring freedom if we’d come to him

So Joseph raised Jesus with a fatherly love

Knowing his role was to steward this boy

Incarnated child of God from above

To the carpenter father on earth he was joy

Isaiah foretold and the prophets of old said that

He would bring hope to a world filled with sin

Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace

He would bring freedom if we’d come to him

How can I understand my earthly role?

To be Jesus to my sons and daughter

When we all meet the Father at the end of our time

We’ll be brothers and sisters all praising together

We worship You Father forever and ever and ever

For ever and ever

Isaiah foretold and the prophets of old said that

He would bring hope to a world filled with sin

Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace

He would bring freedom if we’d come to him

Away in a manger in a Middle East town

God’s own handmaiden gave birth to a son

Her husband to be took the child as his own

For the angel had told him that this was the One

“Be near me Lord Jesus I ask thee to stay

Close by me forever, and love me I pray

Bless all the dear children in thy tender care

And fit us for heaven to live with thee there”
